Job Posting: C-Space Technical Director
The Opportunity
Vancouver Creative Space (C-Space) is seeking a Technical Director to oversee the maintenance and regular technical operations of our creation space “Progress Lab 1422” and to work with resident companies to execute a select amount of their programming developed on site. PL1422 provides technically equipped low-cost creative space to the theatre industry, the broader arts sector and serves as a full-time base of operations for the nine resident companies. A long-term, dedicated home for our organizations is an important facet of increasing stability and longevity – essential to our operations and BC’s wider artistic practice. Each tenant company and their staff have brought their talents to developing and managing PL1422, from construction design and fundraising to agreements and policy.PL1422 has provided a great boost to our collective capacity, and it is an achievement that directly benefits the wider community through programming partnerships and affordable rentals. This position is envisioned to become an essential part of PL1422 in supporting the resident companies, and ensuring workplace safety for all activities on premises.
Job Title: Technical Director
Position Type: Contract – 30 hours/week
Reporting to: Operations Manager
Salary: $24/hour + health benefits ($37,440 annually)
Start date: September 4, 2023
Position Summary
The Technical Director will report to the Operations Manager, and work in close collaboration with the working board of C-space and relevant sub-committees to successfully execute duties with a primary focus on workplace safety and technical coordination. The Technical Director, as part of their duties, will also take on the technical direction of a range of on-site events, as well as several larger scale projects and productions developed on site and presented elsewhere. Any travel required for such off-site projects and productions outside of the Greater Vancouver Area will be provided for.

Responsibilities:
Scheduling, Managing, and overseeing small – large crew calls.
Maintaining an up to date call list of technicians for hire.
Maintaining and repairing sound, lighting, and video equipment.
Maintaining and updating a technical inventory for PL1422
Maintaining and updating a technical inventory for individual PL1422 organizations where appropriate
Ensuring workplace safety for all activities occurring on-site at PL1422 in compliance with minimum standards of Worksafe BC
Liaising with designers, directors, producers, production managers, stage managers, and other such artists on technical needs for activities happening on-site.
Strategizing efficiency of studio space restoration to identify shared needs and redundant labour.
Required Qualifications
A minimum of 5 years of professional experience within technical theatre, either in a Technical Direction capacity or as a general technician.
Proven track record of managing production and technical budgets of at least $30,000.
Ability to anticipate and budget accordingly for crewing requirements on a range of activities.
Sufficient familiarity with most, if not all, theatrical design disciplines (set, lighting, audio, projection, and video) in order to provide a high level of technical support on productions and development projects.
Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve complex technical issues.
Proficiency in programming/operation of ETC EOS lighting desks. (Familiarity with ETC Element an asset.)
Proficiency in programming/operation of a wide range of sound consoles both digital and analogue. (Familiarity with Presonus Studio Live 16 is an asset.)
Proficiency in maintaining and operating a wide range of analogue sound equipment.
Proficiency in programming Qlab for use with sound, video and lighting.
Proficiency in programming/operating OBS and video mixing hardware.
Proficiency in Digital Audio Workstations (DAWS) ideally Logic Pro X or Studio One.
Basic skills in recording and editing of digital video material.
In depth knowledge of wireless audio hardware and software.
In depth knowledge of wireless lighting hardware and software (familiarity with Astera lighting systems is considered an asset).
Ability to safely rig technical equipment.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and Google Workspaces (Gmail, Drive, Sheets, Docs).
Cultural sensitivity in adapting technical procedures and protocol for matters of inclusion.
Desired Skills & Experience (Assets)
Familiarity with Progress Lab 1422 companies and the type of programming they produce.
Past Experience working with Progress Lab 1422 resident companies in a technical role.
Expertise in Sound and Sound Engineering.
Knowledge of local rental houses, and networks for In-kind exchange within the local arts sector.
Proficiency with programming Qlab for networking.
Ability to adapt technical knowledge to working in unconventional spaces.
Experience with Grant Writing.
Experience working with a wide range of cultural groups and familiarity with cultural customs.
